GAZA-.

Palestinian hunger strikes: Media missing in action

Is the mass Palestinian prisoner hunger strike the beginning of the Palestinian Spring?

Settlement expansion and targeted killings have increased as Palestinians move towards political restraint and away from violence [GALLO/GETTY]

Santa Barbara, CA -
Can anyone doubt that if there were more than 1,500 prisoners engaged in a hunger strike in any country in the world other than Palestine, the media in the West would be obsessed with the story? Such an obsession would, of course, be greatest if such a phenomenon were to occur in an adversary state, such as Iran or China, but almost anywhere it would be featured news, that is, anywhere but Palestine. It would be highlighted day after day, and reported on from all angles, including the severe medical risks associated with such a lengthy refusal to take food, with respected doctors and human rights experts sharing their opinions.

Israel Plots an Endgame

llegal Settlements Bonanza

by RAMZY BAROUD

Israel’s colonization policies are entering an alarming new phase, comparable in historic magnitude to the original plans to colonize Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem following the war of 1967.

On April 24, an Israeli ministerial committee approved three settlement outposts – Bruchin and Rechelim in the northern part of the West Bank, and Sansana in the south. Although all settlement activities in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are considered illegal by international law, Israeli law differentiates between sanctioned settlements and ‘illegal’ ones. This distinction has actually proved to be no more than a disingenuous attempt at conflating international law, which is applicable to occupied lands, and Israeli law, which is in no way relevant.

Israel Rides the Rollercoaster of Mass Hysteria

The US continues to indulge Netanyahu’s manufactured hysteria. (Pete SouzaWhite House Photo)

Spending a week in Israel these days is like being trapped within a scene from the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Like Jack Nicholson in the lead role of that classic film, you might not be insane but the doctors and nurses who run the psychiatric ward manufacture every few minutes a collective hysteria to keep everyone in the grip of fear and hatred. Everyone is an enemy, every a visitor an existential threat.

One door opens in the narrow roads can take you to multiple houses belonging to many families

‏When you are coming back to your home, think of the others

‏Don’t forget the camp people

‏When you are sleeping and counting stars think of others

‏There are people don’t have place to sleep

Mahmoud Darwish

When we study the modern architectural models, full of all excitement and suspense elements, where all the modern planning theory are applied, where there are important green areas, surrounded by home-gardens, models which are so suitable environmentally, we always got confusing answers about the size of the people belonging for the place. Therefore many times we found that citizens of the modern sustainable cities don’t belong very well for these spaces, and they have major problems in their ability to fully integrate there. On the other hand when we take a look to places where poverty, deprivation and suffering reign, we are totally surprised by the ability of the people there: they belong to those places fully.

Another Palestinian mosque torched in West Bank

Print
PDF

AP, RAMALLAH
Vandals set fire to another mosque in the West Bank on Thursday and defaced it with Hebrew graffiti. Suspicion fell on Jewish extremists widely assumed to be behind stepped-up violence against Palestinians and the Israeli military.
The governor of Ramallah, Laila Ghanam, said arsonists doused the mosque in the village of Burqa with gasoline, then set it afire.
The Hebrew words for "war" and "Mitzpe Yitzhar" were painted in red on a wall, and the Israeli military said carpets and chairs were burned.
Mitzpe Yitzhar is an unauthorized Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank where Israeli security forces demolished two structures early Thursday.
In recent years, settlers have attacked Palestinian and Israeli military targets in retaliation for Israeli government operations they see as overly sympathetic to Palestinians.

The Palestinian flag was raised for the first time on Tuesday above a UN agency, the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, in a diplomatic victory won despite stiff resistance from the US and Israel.
President Mahmud Abbas looked on as the flag was raised and the Palestinian anthem played, just weeks after Palestine won admission to UNESCO in move that sparked fury and reprisals from Washington and Israel.
"President Abbas wants to show the importance he attaches to UNESCO," a Palestinian diplomat said ahead of the ceremony. "And this is the first time that the flag will be flown at the headquarters of a UN institution." UNESCO said the flag-hoisting was a symbolic ceremony "to mark Palestine's admission to the organisation" that takes place each time a new member joins.

Fakhri Barghouti: Recounting a Lifetime of Struggle

(Photo: Toufic Haddad)

By: Toufic Haddad

After 33 years in captivity, Fakhri Barghouti returned to his people and his family as part of the Gilad Shalit deal last month. He shared with al-Akhbar the painful memories of a lifetime of loss, struggle, hope, and defiance.

Toufic Haddad: How did you get involved in the national movement? What were the motivating factors in your life that led to this life choice?
Fakhri Barghouti: No one starts off being a national devotee. It’s not like this is something that comes pre-packaged, but is rather something that takes place slowly with the accumulation of experience as one’s individual awareness of life under occupation comes into focus.
The first thing that planted a seed in my head was the death of my brother Ribhi [Ribhi was one of the Palestinian fedayeen based in Lebanon and died in events known as the Battle of Arqoub in 1970.] At the time, he had made plans to marry a woman from our village. On the night of her sending off, we held a wedding celebration for her, because most of us in the village would not be able to attend the actual wedding, and our house was busy preparing festivities for her departure.
I was 16 at the time. Around dusk, a vegetable vendor came by the village in his truck with the bad news, but saw that a wedding was taking place. Ashamed to approach our family directly, he went instead to a relative’s house next door, and told them that our brother had been killed, and that the wedding should be stopped. There was no point in the bride going across the bridge to Jordan the next day, as her groom was dead.
To this day this experience is etched in my memory: my sister noticed that the neighbors were not acting normally, and persisted in whispering amongst themselves. She approached them and was about to ask what had happened, and they took note and approached her instead. It was then that she realized that they knew it was something to do with our family, with one of the women eventually plucking up the courage to tell her.

Jailed for sailing to Gaza

Two boats of solidarity activists on their way to Gaza were intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters

Israel blockades Gaza's borders, as well as controlling the territory's coastline and airspace [GALLO/GETTY]

Two boats full of courageous passengers were on their way to Gaza when they were intercepted by the Israeli military in international waters on Friday, November 4.
We call the passengers courageous because they sailed from Turkey on November 2 with the knowledge that, at any moment they might be boarded by Israeli commandos intent on stopping them - perhaps violently, as the Israeli military did in 2010 when they killed nine humanitarian aid workers on the Turkish boat named Mavi Marmara.
The boats - one from Canada and one from Ireland - were carrying 27 passengers, including press and peace activists from Ireland, Canada, the United States, Australia and Palestine. They were unarmed, and the Israeli military knew that. They were simply peace activists wanting to connect with civilians in Gaza, and the Israeli military knew that. Yet naked aggression was used against them in international waters - something that is normally considered an act of piracy.

Israel to 'prevent' aid ships reaching Gaza

Israeli navy says it will stop two boats carrying pro-Palestinian activists from reaching blockaded territory

Israel has announced that its navy will attempt to stop two boats carrying pro-Palestinian activists bound for the Gaza Strip, in the latest attempt by activists to break the four-year Israeli blockade against the territory.
The Israeli military spokesman's office said the country's navy was "prepared to contact" the vessels and had "completed the necessary preparations in order to prevent them from reaching the Gaza Strip".
The Canadian boat Tahrir and the Irish boat MV Saoirse left the port of Fethiye in southwest Turkey on Wednesday after Turkish authorities gave them permission to sail to the Greek island of Rhodes.

Al Jazeera's Casey Kauffman, on board one of the ships, said that in total it would be a 50-hour journey, and they were currently one-fifth of the way there.

"Everyone on the boat wants to get to Gaza," he said, adding that while the activists are prepared for the possibility of an Israeli interception, the initiative will not be wasted.
"It will still bring attention to the situation in Gaza, and the blockade of the Gaza Strip."
Lieutenant-Colonel Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military official, would not say how the boats might be stopped, saying only "we will have to assess and see if we are facing violent passengers."
Describing their journey as a "provocation", she said Israel would offer to unload any aid supplies on board and deliver them to Gaza.
