Wall Street Journal investigates role of U.S. drones in Roboski massacre
In a long article published on the Wall Street Journal, Adam Entous and Joe Parkinson investigate the massacre in the village of Roboski. On 28 December Turkish military forces bombed a group of villagers crossing the border into Iraq for small smuggling, the sole activity in that impervious mountain area. Thirty four people were killed when war planes stroke.
The civilian toll also set off alarms at the Pentagon: It was a U.S. Predator drone that spotted the men and pack animals, officials said, and American officers alerted Turkey.

Speaking at the reception on the occasion of April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day, Turkish Chief of General Staff Necdet Özel touched on the Roboski event and asked for “silence” from the press.
Özel claimed the General Staff to have delivered all related documents to the prosecution’s office and made the following evaluation concerning Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) objection to inform the sub-commission of Parliemantary Commission on Human Rights; “We have delivered all required information to Specially Authorized Prosecutor of Diyarbakır within the scope of the authority it has. However, nobody seems to comply with the confidentiality decision of the judiciary.”

Including 17 children, 34 civilians involved in border trade in Roboski village of Uludere/Şırnak lost their life as a result of bombing by TSK warplanes on December 28, 2011.

As the mainstream Turkish media didn’t report the event for 14 hours, Presidency of General Staff made a statement after 14 hours which explained the bombing as an “operational accident”.

UK Report: Kurdish Issue a “litmus test” for Democracy

HERMIONE GEE

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- “Prospects for peaceful steps towards reconciliation between Kurds in the South East and the Turkish state appear to be receding,” says a new British parliamentary report on Turkey.

The process of ‘Democratic Opening’ initiated by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2009 has been replaced by a “return to confrontation and armed conflict,” the report says, noting that the state’s treatment of the Kurdish issue should be seen as a “litmus test for Turkish democracy.”
The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee report, entitled “UK-Turkey relations and Turkey’s regional role” concludes that, although Turkey is a valuable economic and political partner for Britain, the shortcomings of its justice system and its poor human rights record make it hard to advocate closer ties between the two countries.

Former, current intelligence chiefs to testify in KCK terrorism probe

TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A chief prosecutor on Wednesday confirmed that the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) undersecretary, his predecessor and a former deputy undersecretary were summoned to testify in an ongoing probe into a Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) affiliated organization.
İstanbul Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor Fikret Seçen on Wednesday said MİT Undersecretary Hakan Fidan, his predecessor Emre Taner and MİT Deputy Undersecretary Afet Güneş were summoned to testify in the ongoing investigation into the Kurdish Communities Union (KCK), which Turkish prosecutors say is a group that controls the PKK and other affiliated groups. Reports said the three became suspects following recently disclosed talks they had with members of the PKK in Oslo.
Most commentators didn't know what to make of the recent twist in the KCK investigation as Fidan was hand-picked by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his position. Observers recalled that the prime minister said late last year -- after his Justice and Development Party (AK Party) was accused of cracking down on the Kurdish opposition when Büşra Ersanlı, an academic at Marmara University, was arrested as part of the KCK investigation -- that those who "look out for the KCK should reconsider their stance." Erdoğan had not made a comment on the recent developments by the time Today's Zaman went to print on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Tanju Özcan said he had filed charges against Fidan and Güneş, speaking at a press conference at Parliament. He didn't say when the charges were filed. He also said Prime Minister Erdoğan should be included in the investigation. However, sources Today's Zaman talked to say that new evidence -- including testimonies from suspects and witnesses as well as letters exchanged between senior KCK members and PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, which prosecutors say were used for relaying orders for attacks to the PKK -- obtained in the most recent operations into the KCK has played a role in the three men being summoned.

Journalist Kurşun has been sentenced to 166 years and 6 months in prison in 2010
We translated the letter by Vedat Kurşun, editor of the Kurdish daily Azadiya Welat, published by bianet.

I was born on 27 January 1976 in Kızıltepe, district of Mardin. I had to move from one city to another for a long time because of my father’s work as a health officer.
It was only after I had graduated from high school in 1993 that I learned to read and write in my mother language. Because of my interest in the Kurdish language, I made no efforts to continue with my education after high school.
I devoted myself to learn my mother language from then on until the year 2000 when I started to work for Kurdish Azadiya Welat paper.

I had a burst of emotion and said “that's it” when I saw the enormous “Kurdistan” writing which was written in yellow, red and green colours on a wall in Amed where I was walking day dreaming in a period when I as usual took a short break in my education adventure which I didn’t give up despite all difficulties upon Pêşewa Qazî Mihemed’s last will regarding the education of next generations of Kurds… Yes, this was the method…Now that this territory is ours and it is denied its name, then we should in the easiest way show the whole world that this territory is ours…

Ismail Yıldız writes from prison

Ismail Yıldız with writer Yasar Kemal

Having spent the first month since our detention on 20 December morning in Kocaeli F-Type Prison No 1 and 2, I firstly greet all honorable journalists on behalf of all journalists under arrest.
We, the journalists taken into custody once month ago and remanded in custody on the basis of false ‘evidences’, have been receiving letters which have the same senders and contents. These letters from Yasemin Yurtman-Candemir and Emine Akkuzu-Terim, who describe themselves as journalists, ask us what our ‘definition of freedom’ is. As a self-respecting journalist, I would like to remark that the content of these letters, which as a matter of fact try to describe our arrest as a score against us with an ironic and defiant language, is actually a shame for them, not for us, because detaining someone doesn’t have the strength to jail any conscious and strong willed person from freedom.
The general content of these letters which fail to obtain the aim the senders have set, is as follows; “Your hand and language are so strong that your pen speaks more than yourself. Therefore, could you tell us what you think the definition of ‘freedom’ is? What has changed in your definition of freedom? What does ‘freedom’ mean for you now? Loves…

Salih Örhan whose 17-year old son Cezair and brothers Hasan and Mehmet Selim disappeared, hopes to get to know the truth
Bones of 16 people were discovered during the excavations in JİTEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit) centre in Diyarbakır while 18 families of missing persons applied to HRA (Human Rights Association) for DNA verification. Excavations, report DIHA News Agency, had been launched following the discovery of human bones during the restoration works in the former JİTEM building in İçkale, known as the address of enforced disappearances and unidentified murders in the region during the 90s. Families now hope to finally find out at least some information about the fate of their disappeared relatives.
One of them is Salih Örhan whose 17-year old son Cezair and brothers Hasan and Mehmet Selim disappeared after being taken away by soldiers during the 90s. Since then, he applied to many authorities, including Seyrek Village Police Station, Kulp and Lice District Police Stations, Diyarbakır Police Department, Gendarmerie, currently abolished State Security Court Attorney and European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). None of these applications succeed to have any information about the fate of his relatives.

Kürkçü: Roboski massacre was not a "mistake"

Print
PDF

There is an intention to drive a wedge between the Kurdish people and the struggle for freedom, says Mersin MP
BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Mersin deputy Ertuğrul Kürkçü is in Europe for a round of meetings. We publish extracts of an interview he gave to Perwer Yaş of ANF Turkish service.
What is your opinion on the reaction Kurds and democrats had after the massacre in the village of Roboski?
- In my opinion, this massacre verbally drew a stronger reaction than I expected. CHP (Republican People’s Party) focused on the way of the event, not its essence. They admitted that there was a mistake in the military operation. In other words, they agree to the military operation, meaning an "effective" operation. The problem is that these kind of massacres are and will continue to be inevitable as long as military operations of these kind are approved. These are operation aimed at total destruction and intimidation. An intimidation operation against civilians will no doubt take place in line with the destruction operation against guerrilla forces. CHP is wrong in presuming that this operation is not part of the intimidation operation against civilians.

TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL The Diyarbakır Specially Authorized Prosecutor's Office has said the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) have yet to provide video footage taken by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and used as the main source of intelligence for an order to stage an airstrike that killed a group of civilians in northern Iraq on Dec. 29.
Speaking to the Taraf daily on Sunday, Diyarbakır Specially Authorized Prosecutor Ahmet Karaca noted that the Diyarbakır Specially Authorized Prosecutor's Office and the Uludere Prosecutor's Office had requested the visuals, which had four hours of video footage of the villagers who were mistakenly targeted by Turkish F16s. The TSK says it intended to strike Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, who have often staged attacks on Turkish military targets in the past after crossing the Turkish-Iraqi border on routes used by smugglers.

BDP: Turkey sliding into chaos

It is clear that police operations against Kurds are managed coordinately by the AKP government, says BDP
The BDP has reacted strongly to the latest wave of arrests today.
In a press release co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Gültan Kışanak had said that "It is clear that, police operations against Kurds are managed coordinately by the AKP Government. All the police raids happened just after the PM Erdoğan’s comminatory speeches against Kurdish politicians. Especially after the last modifications on the judicial system under the name of the “judicial reforms”, judges and prosecutors abide by AKP Government. In spite of this reality is criticized by some columnists, AKP Government increases the pressures step by step against media executives".
