Italian cultural attractions go on strike over cuts

Most of Italy's major cultural attractions are closed because of a strike over government plans to cut their funding.

Hundreds of museums, art galleries and heritage sites are affected. The Italian government wants to cut 280 million euros (£237m, $380m) from the culture budget over the next three years as part of an austerity drive. Italy has more World Heritage Sites than any other country, a fact that has put even greater strain on funding.

I feel trapped. I try to get on with my life, but he finds me everywhere. On my couch, when I turn on my computer, and in my office, where he dominates all discussion. He's there in the morning, when I drink my cappuccino at the Ruschena bar in Rome and my fellow customers make jokes about him. He's there at parents' evening, where apparently conservative parents stop and ask me whether we should start a revolution.

Silvio Berlusconi's government "has reached a further milestone", declared his party's equal opportunities spokeswoman, Barbara Saltamartini. And who could doubt her? In a week when the latest of several women claimed to have been paid for sex by Italy's prime minister, he chaired a cabinet meeting yesterday that approved a bill outlawing prostitution.
